Despite their popularity in the 80's glam rock era, the ballad has always been much maligned amongst the true metallers. While such tunes as "Fade to Black" and "Watch the Children Pray" have a more constructive slant, it's drivel like "sweet child of mine" and "each rose has a thorn" that has us frantically reaching for the skip button.
